The Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series are examples of cars that are a bit too successful for their own good. Spending a lot of money on a PCP for a German hatch as a junior executive will no longer amaze your friends. The solution may be found in Citroen's luxury brand, DS, and, for once, it may not be the compromise you would anticipate. See our comprehensive review of the DS 4 below.
The Vauxhall Astra and the most recent Peugeot 308 share a basis with the DS 4. This makes it a far better option than the Citroen C4, which it sort of replaces, thanks to its assortment of electrified engines, astute electronics, and long list of included safety features.
DS 4 Fuel Consumption
Additionally, a wide variety of engines are offered, such as diesels, gasoline engines, and a plug-in hybrid with a 35-mile electric range. In 2024, a version that runs entirely on electricity is planned.
Although the PHEV makes sense for drivers of work cars, many private purchasers are unlikely to be considering it because to its rather expensive list price. That's unfortunate because you might be able to get through the commute without using the petrol engine at all thanks to its 39-mile electric range.
If you don't use it correctly, the least expensive DS4 to run could also be the most costly. Officially, the plug-in hybrid E-Tense 225 can achieve up to 269.5 mpg, but regular charging is the only way to get close to this. According to official WLTP tests, it can go up to 41.6 miles on electricity when completely charged. It will be much more thirsty after it is empty.
With an official fuel economy of up to 61.2 mpg, we would choose the diesel BlueHDi 130 for long-distance driving. In the actual world, a mid-50s mpg should be achievable with little effort.
Officially, the DS4 Puretech 130 petrol engine can now achieve 48.6 mpg.
DS 4 Running Costs
You don't really need to worry about the first year's VED (roadtax) fee because it is based on emissions and is included in the on-the-road pricing. The majority of DS4 models will then have a fixed annual cost of £180.
It should come as no surprise that the plug-in hybrid DS 4 is the most efficient model available, based on official WLTP statistics. However, the estimated 323 mpg fuel efficiency is only achievable in theory provided you mostly utilise the 35-mile electric range and remember to fully charge the battery. Realistic expectations in the real world are 20–25 miles of e-range and 50–60 mpg.
On the WLTP cycle, diesel versions deliver between 51 and 61 mpg; based on our experience with this engine in other vehicles, you may match or even surpass those figures in some circumstances.
The 1.2-litre petrol engine achieves 41–48 mpg, and the 180- and 225-hp 1.6-litre engines achieve 38–43 mpg. Although not as good as the best in class, these figures are nonetheless respectable. Although the Hybrid 136's official fuel economy is 54 mpg, I've found that my long-termer typically gets between 45 and 47 mpg.
The DS 4's fuel usage is displayed below in MPG (miles per gallon) and km/L (kilometres per litre). Both of these values indicate how far the DS 4 version can travel per gallon (4.55 litres) and litre (1000ml) of fuel. The greater the MPG or km/L value, the more fuel-efficient the vehicle and the lower its operating costs. In addition to the combined numbers, we provide the fuel consumption of a DS 4 in urban / city driving situations, as well as on the open highway / motorway.

The 'real fuel consumption' shows you the amount of fuel your DS 4 is consuming to travel a fixed distance. This is normally shown as L/100km. This figure shows you the amount of fuel consumed in litres for every 100kms travelled. This is the most commonly used figure for showing the fuel consumption of a vehicle. The formula to calculate it is:
(Litres of fuel used X 100) / Kilometers travelled = L/km.
