Hyundai's luxury division is called Genesis; consider Toyota's Lexus or Nissan's Infiniti. Its arrival in the UK may have escaped you, but the company has been been busy enough in America to come at us with a respectable range of cars, and is sufficiently confident to challenge the German brands’ domination of the premium family SUV market.
The Genesis GV70, which stands for "versatile," is positioned between the Genesis GV60 and the Genesis GV80 and competes with SUVs like the premium Audi Q5, the nimble BMW X3, and the technologically advanced Mercedes GLB. You can add vehicles like the fast Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the Volvo XC60 to that list.
You don't have the option of a tax-busting plug-in hybrid (PHEV) because the GV70 is currently only available in two non-hybrid petrol and diesel models, though there is an EV variant called the GV70 Electrified.
Genesis G70 & GV70 Fuel Consumption
The most efficient variant available is the 200hp, 2.2-litre, four-cylinder, which has a real-world fuel economy in the low-40s.
Although a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 300 horsepower is available, we found it difficult to surpass 25 mpg in testing, which is a bad performance in the current market. The GV70's value is where it really shines. Since you get so much stuff as standard, it undercuts the majority of competitors.
Although the diesel is rated between 38 and 40 mpg, the petrol unit only manages fuel economy of 27.9 to 29.7 mpg in the WLTP combined cycle.
As anticipated, the diesel engine produces 190–200 g/km of CO2, which is less than the petrol engine's 216–230 g/km.
The all-electric variant has a claimed WLTP range of 283 miles, a robust 490PS in Boost mode, a powerful 700Nm of torque, and a 77.4kWh battery that powers a motor on each axle for all-wheel drive.
It should come as no surprise that the Genesis GV70 diesel is the more cost-effective of the combustion-engine versions. However, in an era of hybrid vehicles and outstanding little turbocharged petrol engines, WLTP combined cycle statistics of 38 to 40 mpg are a little disappointing.
Despite this, the diesel engine performs far better than the petrol engine, which only achieves 27.9 to 29.7 mpg in the same cycle. With CO2 emissions of 190–200 g/km, the diesel engine inevitably produces lower emissions than the petrol engine, which produces 216–230 g/km.
Genesis GV70 Running Costs
The electric Genesis GV70 has a competitive 283-mile range. Like all Hyundai group EVs, the powertrain is supported by 800-volt electric architecture. This means that, in contrast to most competitors, the car can use ultra-fast 350kW chargers, if you can find one, which will allow you to top up your battery from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes.
In addition to five years of free access to the Ionity network at a discounted rate of 24p per kWh instead of the usual fee of 69p per kWh, Genesis has teamed with Shell Recharge to provide access to its charging stations.
Below is a breakdown of the Genesis GV70's fuel usage in both miles per gallon (MPG) and kilometres per litre (km/L). The range of that specific Genesis GV70 model is indicated by both of these statistics for each gallon (4.55 litres) and each litre (1000 millilitres) of fuel. An automobile's fuel efficiency and cost of operation increase with its MPG or km/L rating. In addition to the combined numbers, we also provide you with the fuel consumption that a Genesis GV70 is likely to have in city or urban driving situations and on open highways or motorways.

The 'real fuel consumption' shows you the amount of fuel your Genesis GV70 is consuming to travel a fixed distance. This is normally shown as L/100km. This figure shows you the amount of fuel consumed in litres for every 100kms travelled. This is the most commonly used figure for showing the fuel consumption of a vehicle. The formula to calculate it is:
(Litres of fuel used X 100) / Kilometers travelled = L/km.
