When the Mercedes-Benz GLB was first released in 2019, it was a smart addition to the company's lineup, and it is still somewhat of a niche buster today. Mercedes has somehow managed to fit a third row of seats into the cabin of this SUV, which is intended to sit between the GLA and GLC despite its very small size. We believe it is among the greatest seven-seat SUVs available due to its ingenious packaging.
Due to its seating size, it competes with vehicles like the Peugeot 5008, SEAT Tarraco, and Skoda Kodiaq, as well as the other MPVs from the Stellantis Group that are van-based and have seven seats. But none of its competitors can match the GLB's perceived prestige and attractiveness.
Across the board, the GLB's claimed fuel efficiency numbers are remarkable. Mercedes claims that the front-wheel drive 200 d can achieve up to 50.4 mpg, making it the most economical alternative. However, given the car's size and weight, even the petrol versions aren't awful; in WLTP tests, the 200 and AMG 35 4Matic models achieved up to 40.4 and 31.0 mpg, respectively.
Mercedes GLB Fuel Consumption
For an SUV of its size, the real-world mileage range of 5.5 to 6.4 mpp (miles per pound) is more than satisfactory. It should come as no surprise that the diesel will outperform the petrol variant in terms of value.
The entry-level front-wheel drive GLB 200 and the performance-focused AMG GLB 35 4Matic are your options if you want a petrol vehicle; we'll go into more detail about the latter later in this post. With 163 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque, it can reach a high speed of 129 mph and go from 0 to 62 mph in 9.1 seconds. While the other GLB models employ an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic, this is the only one that has a seven-speed.
Mercedes GLB Petrol vs Diesel
GLB 200d and 220d are diesel versions. With 150 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque, the former can be equipped with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. At a top speed of 127 mph, that is sufficient to get from 0 to 62 mph in 9.0 seconds. The output is upped to 190 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque if that's not enough and you want the 220d. This reduces the time it takes to get from 0 to 62 mph to 7.6 seconds and increases the peak speed to 135 mph. The 220d comes with 4Matic all-wheel drive as standard as well.
The majority of vehicles should be reasonably priced to operate, at least when considering fuel consumption, if you exclude the high-performance Mercedes GLB 35 AMG.
The official combined fuel efficiency of the Mercedes GLB 200 petrol and diesel models is 40.4 mpg and 50.5 mpg, respectively, for the variants with the smallest alloy wheels.
Regarding insurance, the Mercedes GLB models with the 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system are rated higher, between groups 30 and 35, depending on the specifications, while the base models fall into group 24.
The fuel consumption of the Mercedes GLB is shown below in both MPG (Miles Per Gallon) and km/L (Kilometers Per Litre). Both of these figures show you how far that particular Mercedes GLB variant can travel for every gallon (4.55 litres) and every litre (1000ml) of fuel. The higher the MPG or km/L value, the more economical the car is and the cheaper it will be to run. As well as providing the combined figures, we also give you the fuel consumption you can expect from a Mercedes GLB in urban / city driving conditions as well as what can be expected on the open highway / motorway.

The 'real fuel consumption' shows you the amount of fuel your Mercedes GLB is consuming to travel a fixed distance. This is normally shown as L/100km. This figure shows you the amount of fuel consumed in litres for every 100kms travelled. This is the most commonly used figure for showing the fuel consumption of a vehicle. The formula to calculate it is:
(Litres of fuel used X 100) / Kilometers travelled = L/km.
